Lunch Club

Lunch Club Pictures

Our Lunch Club called ‘Open Door’ is an opportunity for those of a special age to meet in our Church hall every Friday about 11.15 in the morning for coffee and a chat, and then a hot lunch is served at midday, main course and dessert with orange and water to drink and a tea or coffee to follow.

The lunches are prepared at Lagley Hall and organised by Dacorum Meals on Wheels Service.
The menu is varied, and covers for any special dietary requirements, and the cost is very reasonable.
We have four teams of willing helpers who prepare, serve and wash up, and also enjoy chatting to the diners.

If transport is needed, we have four very able bodied qualified drivers and one supply driver, all Church members, who collect in the Dacorum Community Wheels bus, the pink ice cream van, and we pick up two members from Little Gaddesden, the ride itself, if you are elderly and cannot get out on your own, is a pleasure, especially at bluebell time, and if you see some deer.

We always try to make them feel loved on Valentines Day with chocolates, posies for Mother’s Day, Eggs at Easter time, and at Harvest Festival they happily go home with flowers, a few soft fruits and four homemade cakes.

In June, we have our annual outing ably organised by Ann Winfield, and last year we went on a steam train ride in Pages Park, Leighton Buzzard, which was followed by a cream tea.

Twice a month we have a little service for those who like to share. There is no pressure, but we are pleased with the response. Just a simple thought, prayer, hymn, but meaningful for us all to share.

‘Count Your Blessings’ is certainly one favourite hymn. At Christmas we have a special lunch with a little carol service first, and last year the mayor, his wife and chauffeur honoured us. They were well received, and made themselves very welcome by moving round the tables chatting happily.

We have recently been asking them how they celebrated Christmas when they were children, a stocking with an orange and a sixpence etc. and a simple meal, and then asked how they celebrated last year, one dear lady said she went to lunch at the Kings Head, Ivinghoe. What a difference ninety years make!

“When we were younger and working, we longed for the Christmas holidays, now we are glad to get back to the routine and return to lunch club” said another dear lady. At the moment, we have sixteen ladies and gentlemen who come regularly.

It is lovely to see them all caring and sharing for each other, and we feel privileged to be a listening ear to them sometimes when they have a problem, so if you know anyone who would like to come and share with us, please give them a warm invitation, and we would just ask you all to continue to pray for the work of this little group, that each of us may come to know more of God’s love and care.

Please contact Gill or Pat on 01442 385193 for further details.
